How do breakout and price action trading work?
Modified on Thu, 5 Nov at 6:52 AM
Breakout trading means entering a trade when the price breaks above or below a key support or resistance level. Price action trading means deciding from price movements alone, without indicators, using candlestick patterns, support and resistance levels and trend structures.
Breakout Strategy
Definition: The idea is that once a price breaks through a significant level, it will continue in that direction for a certain period.
Example: if Netflix (NFLX) has been trading in a range between $500 and $510 for several weeks and breaks above $510, a trader might enter a long position, expecting the price to keep rising now that it has broken through a resistance level.
Use Case
- Breakout Confirmation: Enter a position once the price breaks a key resistance (for buying) or support (for selling) level.
- Target: Use a price target or trailing stop to manage risk and profit once the breakout happens.
Pivex Academy: the Technical Analysis module teaches how to use support and resistance levels to identify potential breakout opportunities, and the Fundamental Analysis lessons show how to evaluate a company’s intrinsic value through financial statements and key metrics.
Price Action Trading
Example: if the EUR/USD pair forms a bullish engulfing pattern at a strong support level, a trader might enter a buy position, expecting the price to rise.
Use Case
- Tools: Candlestick patterns, trendlines, support/resistance levels.
- Entry: Based on clear price signals (e.g., pin bars, engulfing candles).
- Risk Control: Stop-loss placed just beyond key levels.
Pivex Academy: the Technical Analysis module teaches how to interpret candlestick behavior, identify reversals, and trade confidently without depending on indicators.
